Over 12,000 Join Anti-Corruption Rally In Philippine Capital
MANILA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Over 12,000 participants conducted a rally in Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines' capital, as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, according to local police.
Local media reported that protesters rallied to call for anti-corruption efforts and support Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who is under investigation for plunder and faces possible arrest.
Two police officers were injured during the confrontation, one being pinned by a bus and the other being punched.
Four protesters have been arrested following a series of incidents between demonstrators and law enforcement personnel. The protest caused heavy traffic as one of the country's busiest roads was blocked early in the morning, and police said the action was unauthorized.
The protest action also disrupted official government activities. Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos canceled a scheduled luncheon with the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines due to the demonstrations.
